Grand Miramar Club & Spa

Grand Miramar Club & Spa

Perched in the hills along the coast just south of the central city, Grand Miramar Club and Spa is not in the most convenient location, and it certainly is not a budget property. But accommodations here often can be booked at prices lower than the upscale furnishings and facilities would suggest is possible.

Three on-site restaurants offer sweeping views and delicious food. A small spa caters to visitors, as does a well-appointed gym with views of Banderas Bay to complement your workout.

Grand Miramar offers five-star amenities at rates that sometimes drop as low as $100/night. Those prices come during the off-season and usually require a four-night stay.

This is not a place to see and be seen. In fact, it is rather quiet. Rides to the center of the action are about $5 and 10 minutes by taxi.

Sheraton Buganvilias Resort

The Sheraton Buganvilias Resort is in the Hotel Zone, about 10 minutes by foot from the Malecón walkway in the city's historic center. With 475 rooms and the largest meeting and convention facilities in town, the Sheraton is a local landmark.

But what does it offer budget travelers?

Weekday rates during the off-season months come in as low as $90/night when booking multiple nights. There are also all-inclusive offers that include meals in the resort's restaurants.

That's not a bad rate when you consider the Sheraton Buganvilias is directly on the ocean, offers four on-site lighted tennis courts, two gyms, two spas and two heated pools, among other amenities.

CasaMagna Marriott

The CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta is among the most awarded resorts in the region, and it offers a full range of services with its more than 400 rooms.

But Advance Purchase Rates on a standard room sometimes are available at $135/night. Bear in mind that this rate does not include an ocean view and is completely non-refundable. The more forgiving Leisure Rate of $169 is non-refundable within seven days of arrival.

Travelers on a strict budget will shrug and move along to another option. But these prices are reasonable for a property that has earned a AAA Four Diamond Rating and, according to the website, also recently ranked among Conde Nast Traveler's Top 100 Hotels in the World.

The hotel has completed $10.7 million in renovations to its guest rooms, restaurants and meeting facilities. The Ohtli Spa on the property offers a variety of treatments, and you need not be a guest to purchase the services. Among the restaurants here, La Estancia and Las Casitas stand out for excellent dining opportunities.

Playa Los Arcos Hotel Beach Resort and Spa

Some might complain of noise and crowds, but if you want to be near the beach and the nightlife in Puerto Vallarta, Playa Los Arcos Hotel Beach Resort and Spa offers a prime location at Olas Altas 380, directly on the ocean.

A typical room rate here is just under $100/night (and don't forget about Puerto Vallarta's 19 percent room tax), but lower rates can be found in the off-season. An all-inclusive rate of $176/night includes meals, drinks and gratuities.

There are two swimming pools on the property, as well as a hot tub that looks out on the ocean. The front desk is staffed around the clock and you will find a variety of restaurants nearby, including the adjacent Mi Pueblito, which offers a high quality menu with its ocean view.

Hotel Catedral

Hotel Catedral, as the name implies, it is not far from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and its prominent bell tower. Technically, the church is not a cathedral. Nonetheless, many people refer to it as such, and the hotel's name connects this small boutique property with one of the central landmarks in the city.

The church is about three blocks away, and the beach is also a short walk from this well-located hotel in the center of Puerto Vallarta.

Guests are welcomed at nearby Amapa Sunset Beach Club, but the property itself has no swimming pool or patio. You can walk to a number of restaurants, some of which are quite budget friendly.

The hotel provides adequate if not opulent accommodations. The 21 rooms are basic but clean, air conditioned and well-appointed. Free coffee, in-room safes and wi-fi are provided. There are two master suites and two penthouse rooms.

Nightly room rates start as low as $58 during seasonal sales, and typically rent in the $65-$93 range, with suites as high as $156.

Hotel Posada de Roger bills itself as an authentic Mexican hotel just steps from the main beach in the old town. You won't find extensive grounds, but the hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and it does offer a small swimming pool with its 47 guest rooms.

Double room rates vary by season, and range from $46-$62/night. Not bad, considering that those prices are inclusive of Puerto Vallarta's 19 percent room tax.

The rooms are fairly small and basic, but the location puts you steps from a variety of restaurants and attractions in the historic center of Puerto Vallarta. That's why this property draws mostly positive reviews from budget travelers who seek convenience and low prices.

At this writing, Hotel Yasmin does not have a website that I can find. But this hotel does have a loyal following among budget travelers due to its central location (168 Basilio Badillo) and modest room rates.

A point to keep in mind: Hotel Yasmin does not take credit cards, so you'll need enough cash to pay your bill at checkout.

Doubles start at roughly $60/night. You will pay an additional fee for air conditioning, and the rooms do not have phones.

On the plus side, morning coffee and wi-fi are offered for no charge.
