With the Internet gone are the days where you actually had to leave the house to make friends. With social networks like Facebook, EarthTangle and Twitter you can easily find new people near you to connect with. Some say with this new technology is has affected how people engage with others face to face since conversations can be had behind their computers. Social networks provide an easy way to find new friends by allowing you to search for people near you, people that have the same interest as you or other types of ways that can find people you may be interested in. The thing that I love the most about social networks is the fact that when I find someone there are many different types of avenues I can communicate with them from video chat to email. When trying to make new friends online here are some simple tips to help you out with the process.

One of the first things to try to do is make friends of your own friends. You already have a personal connection so it should be easier. So friends-of-friends is an excellent place to start if you're trying to expand your circle. Another thing to try out is to join a group. Being part of a natural group, where you have common interests and are brought together automatically, is the easiest way to make friends: starting a new job, taking a class, having a baby, joining a congregation, or moving to a new neighborhood are great opportunities to join a group. If those situations aren't an option, try to find a different group to join. Get a dog, for example. Or pursue a hobby more seriously.

A third thing to try when trying to make new friends is to start a group for yourself. If you can't find an existing group to join, start a group based around something that interests you. My children's literature reading groups €" (yes, now I've helped start TWO of these groups -- the first one became so large that we had to close it to new members) are among the top joys of my life.

Doing these simple things can help you make new friends online. Just remember that even though you are not face to face try your best to do the same things and be respectful and you shouldn't have any problems.
