The Eiffel Tower is not the Best Place to View Paris. If you've always wanted to ascend Eiffel, don't miss the chance. But know this: it's expensive and time-consuming when lines are long. Views from the basilica at Sacre Coeur (atop Montmartre) are breathtaking at a fraction of the price.
Gratuities are Different Here. Service fees often are added into the price of a meal or service. It is not necessary to add 15% to the total. Parisians typically leave small amounts of change as a kindness, especially when service is good.
Learn a Few Words of French. The words "Parlez vous Anglais?" will go a long way in the realm of politeness and diplomacy. Many Parisians speak excellent English, but they appreciate attempts to respect their language...no matter how poorly you butcher it!
Budget for an Evening of Jazz. Even if you're not an aficionado, this is a great Paris experience that's available throughout the city. Most clubs don't require formal dress. Be aware that Metro trains do not run after midnight.
Don't Miss Paris Parks. Beyond the high-profile attractions and night spots, Paris offers one of the world's best network of parks. Picnics and people-watching are experiences you'll remember long after your return, and the costs are minimal. Le Bois de Boulogne (known simply as "Le Bois") is the largest and was patterned after London's Hyde Park.
Take a Hike. It's free and exhilarating. Be certain to pack comfortable shoes and an explorer's attitude. Obviously, you should avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar, uncrowded areas. For an inexpensive walking tour, check out Paris Walks. It's far cheaper than a tourist bus expedition.
Stores Close Earlier Than Many Visitors Expect. New York got a reputation as "the city that never sleeps." Many tourists assume any big city on earth is open for business at all times. In Europe, store hours are often limited when compared with North America. For example, it's likely most Parisian stores will be closed by 6 p.m. Plan accordingly. One exception is the Monoprix department store, which is open later and aims its lower prices at locals, not tourists.
