Noose Watch?
It has has come to my attention that one of the premier Diversity magazines in the country, Diversity Inc.
has a deplorable category entitled "Noose Watch" displayed prominently on their web site which lists all reported noose incidents across the country unfounded or not.
Although there may be well intentioned thoughts here, it is offensive with a truly divisive message given to the general public.
The editor must know that the implied meaning is clear to most peoples' thinking of all races in that it just has to be a white person who actually did this despicable act based upon the history of the noose between White and Black Americans.
Unfortunately for Diversity Inc and the rest of their readers, as we have seen in the Baltimore incident(and others), that is not always the case.
Where is their balance in their message that Federal investigators found in the Baltimore incident that the noose was placed by an African American? No matter who did this, they should be fired as I have written before.
Anyone who uses messages or symbols of hate should reap the consequences of their actions and those who promote the message, even if unwritten but implied, should report the facts when they are brought out.
Reporting incidents without the actual facts of validity of the any facts casts doubt upon the credibility of any publication and makes the work of diversity and equal employment opportunity that much harder for professionals like myself who are engaged in deep issues such as racism and sexism every day.
Imagine if the Washington Post, USA Today, etc.
, were to report stories without any basis of fact other than that something happened.
It is unethical to depict this type of hate unless you have all of the facts just as it was with other institutions like Duke University with the Lacrosse incident.
More harmful damage to others will be done through this type of activity than whatever good intentions were originally thought would occur.
We have a myriad of diversity and cultural competency issues to deal with without having a "Noose Watch" map! Equity, equal employment opportunity, and fairness applies to everyone in this country.
We cannot allow others to project messages that can only inflame and hurt others without any recourse.
The Department of Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute calls that "dump and run" which is dumping an inflammatory issue on the table and running away from it and not taking any responsibility for the reactions that you have just caused.
