Bottlefeeding Guidelines

    Frequency of Feedings

    • In the first few days or weeks of a baby's life, it isn't necessary---and may be difficult---to establish a strict feeding schedule. In the beginning, you should offer your newborn a bottle every two to three hours, according to BabyCenter. A typical feeding will be 1 to 3 oz. in the first few weeks of your babies life and will gradually increase as he gets older. Don't force your baby to eat. If she stops eating before the bottle is finished, she probably isn't hungry anymore. If you are concerned your baby isn't eating enough, check with your pediatrician for guidelines on how much babies eat. The doctor will also check your baby's weight gain. If he is gaining weight, chances are he is eating enough. After a month or two, your baby's feedings may start to follow a schedule and it will be easier for you to pick up on cues that your baby is hungry.

    Warming Bottles

    • Although it is a matter of personal preference, most babies prefer warm bottles. Never warm a bottle in the microwave because it can cause the formula or breast milk to warm unevenly and may burn your baby's mouth. To properly warm a bottle, start by filling a deep mug, measuring cup or microwave-safe dish and place it in the microwave for a minute or two or until the water reaches a boil. You can also bring water to a boil on the stove. Once the water is boiling, place the bottle in the water for a minute or two or until the fluid is warm. Before giving the bottle to your baby, make sure to test the temperature by squirting a drop or two on the inside of your wrist.

    Sterilizing and Cleaning

    • Before using a bottle or nipple for the first time, it will need to be sterilized. To sterilize a bottle, submerge all parts of it---the bottle itself, the nipple and the nipple ring---in boiling water for at least five minutes. After they have been submerged, place them on a clean, dry towel to dry. Bottles will also need to be thoroughly cleaned after each use. To clean them, submerge in hot, soapy water or run them through a dishwasher cycle. You can purchase several pieces of equipment to help with bottle cleaning. Bottle brushes are available to help clean inside the bottles and nipples. Baskets are also available to hold bottles and nipples in the dishwasher, and you can buy drying racks specifically designed to hold bottles and nipples.
