Concrete Poems

One of the most interesting types of poetry for me is the one they call concrete poems or concrete poetry. These poems are also called shape poems or shape poetry because of the way it is written. In this poem, the words are arranged uniquely. They are arranged to form the shape of the thing that the poem is trying to talk about. The effect that is intended by the poem to the readers is basically to convey the real meaning of the poem with less words and more imagery. Some even call it visual poetry, because just by even looking at the words, you will already have an idea of what the poem is all about.

Concrete poems are widely used in teaching pre - schoolers. It is the child's imagery that is, actually, being developed first before his / her perception to words. Hence, it would be easier for a teacher to let the students understand the poetry because the kids will already have a visual interpretation of the poem even without understanding the words yet.

Although a concrete poem is something that I just learned about, it was actually already being used in the early second or third century B.C. in Greece. Some of the poems were being used as decorations in churches. Even in the onset of the Second World War, more and more poets have been creating concrete poems, making the poetry evolve into so many forms. The poets at that time were making concrete poetry to depict man's needs at that time.

With the little use of words, concrete poetry has also been considered as an abstract form of poetry. Poets in the early times believe that the lesser words and more imagery used in the poem, the more it can be utilized for scientific purposes. As concrete poetry slowly became one of the most widely used form of poetry in the early times, it has also been used in the advertising and promotions industry, as well as in the many other forms of mass media. Today, concrete poems have not been that so popular. Considered as among one of the most hard to compose poems, modern people are not using it that much as in the early times.

Concrete poems, though considered as a form or poetry, are not really that much of a poetry, according to some. If you take away the form and shape from the words, you will not find the poem really decipherable. It is the form and image that makes the poem easier to understand, if not, really comprehensible. Concrete poetry takes meaning only visually, hence if you take away the formation of the words, and just write the words like how the regular words are written, then the poem will not make any sense at all. Because of the limited words that will be used to complete the shape of the subject, the writer will not be able to complete the real sense of the poem with only the words. Moreover, one will also realize that the white blank space is a very important part of the poem.
