Gun Safety - Too Many Accidents Happen

I worked as a custodian for a college dorm when I was in college and discovered once, in the main closet by my bosses office, a large red steel cabinet, when I walked around to the front of the cabinet, I realized what it was.
A gun safe, a massive gun safe, with a huge wheel on the front and a combination lock down by the handle.
Thinking back on that experience I take comfort in the knowledge that there are obviously institutions out there doing the right thing and protecting everyone that they would come in contact with.
I mean, we've all heard of the horrible shootings that have happened on campuses across the US.
To know that I worked for an institution that protected me from those dangers as best they could gave me far more respect for the people I worked for.
A while ago, I was with my grandfather, who I am very close to, he is in love with Westerns, the old movies where the heros ride around with their guns belted to their hips and their large brimmed hats tucked down over one eye.
He and I had finished watching one of his favorite films and had wandered toward bed, but we were locked into and intriguing conversation about responsibility and freedom.
He went into the room I was staying in, and getting down, pulled out from under my bed two long brown cases.
Each was covered in pictures of birds and animals, and had a large combination lock on the side.
When he opened them up, he pulled out some handsome rifles, one of which he had had for many years.
And he talked about the experiences he had had with his rifles, the animals he had brought down, and the joy he had in hunting.
I listened to him fondly, and then he put them away, spun the dials, and slipping them beneath my bed, left the room.
In both of these situations, I found myself pleasantly introduced to the knowledge that I was surrounded by responsible people who cared about me and those around me.
They cared enough to purchase the proper equipment to keep their rifles secure and safe.
I have never heard of an incident happening, either in my family, or at my college.
Both are places that I feel extremely safe in.
Which has given me the personal opinion that there is a duty that all gun owners have, to the citizens that surround them in their community, neighborhoods, and simply, a duty they have to protect their families.
Too many accidents happen.
Accidents that leave families devastated, and wishing they had taken action before.
Little children not taught safety with guns, and raised carelessly with guns around them will come upon too many mishaps for comfort.
More often than not, curiosity will kill this cat.
So, I encourage all gun owners to realize the responsibility they have to do their part.
I believe anyone who would like to, should be allowed to own a gun.
I also believe they should be held to the standard of providing the right protection for their guns.
Responsibility is the biggest lacking agent in America, everyone wants to live life however they want to- but with no consequences.
We can't have it both ways.
Buy a gun safe.
Do your part to keep America safe.
