How to Control Allergies in Your Home?

If you any type of allergy, it is very important to take some steps to reduce allergens. Mostly the ways to reduce indoor allergens are time consuming and way too complicated. Here are a few methods that will help you in controlling various allergies in your home.

1. Entire House
  • Pests – Control cockroaches and mouse with the help of inexpensive traps. Vacuum carpeting and wash hard surfaces regularly to reduce allergy-triggering insect residue.
  • Mold – During warm weather, close doors and windows. Use air conditioning and dehumidifiers and check the roof and ceiling for water leaks.

2. Bedroom
  • Bed and Bedding – Microscopic dust mites feed off shed human skin and their favorite spot is said to be your bed. It is advised to buy allergen-proof bed covers and sealed covers for pillows and mattress. Wash sheets, pillowcases and blankets at least once in a week with warm water. Replace wool or feathered bedding with synthetic material.
  • Windows – Keep the windows clean and stay dependent upon air conditioning during pollen season because open windows can expose you to outdoor allergen triggers. Clean mold and condensation from window frames. Use double-paned windows if you live in a cold climate. On the other hand, a too sealed house can also keep potential irritants in.
  • Curtains and Blinds – Always use washable curtains made of synthetic fabric or    cotton. Make sure to replace horizontal blinds with washable roller-type shades.
  • Flooring – Remove carpeting and use hardwood or flooring or washable area rugs. However, if you are fond of carpets, then it is advisable to use low-pile carpeting. Vacuum it with a vacuum cleaner having small particle air filters.
  • Clutter – Remove all the items from your bedroom that collect dust particles. Books and magazines should not be placed in bedroom. Store children's toys and stuffed animals in plastic bins.

3.Kitchen
  • Sink – Wash dishes regularly. Make sure to scrub the sink to remove food fragments and molds regularly.
  • Stove – Make sure to keep the cooking area clean. Use a vented exhaust fan to reduce moisture.
  • Cabinets and Counters – Regularly clean cabinets and counter tops with detergent and water. Make sure to check cabinets for plumbing leaks. Always store food items in air-tight containers.
  • Food Waste - Keep your kitchen free of food crumbs in order to reduce the chance of having cockroaches. Place all the food waste in a dustbin with an insect-proof lid.

4.Living Room
  • Furniture – Choose easy-to-clean chairs and avoid upholstered furniture. Replace upholstered sofas with furniture made of leather, wood, metal and plastic.
  • Fireplaces – Avoid the usage of wood-burning fireplaces because smoke can worsen your allergies. Natural gas fireplaces are considered best.

5. Bathrooms
  • Ventilation – Install exhaust fans to reduce moisture while taking bath.
  • Walls – Remove wallpapers and install tiles. Use mold-resistant enamel paint to paint walls.
  • Shower and tub – Towel-dry the tub after usage. Replace moldy shower curtains and bathmats regularly.  Make sure to check and repair leaks regularly.
