How to Display American Flags on Homes
- 1). Inspect the flag to ensure that it is clean and free of rips and tears. Do not fly a torn or frayed flag.
- 2). Hang the flag so that the Union (the stars) are on the flag's right, or right of itself. When an observer is facing the flag, the stars should be located on the left side of the flag.
- 3). Display the flag right side up, never upside down.
- 4). Do not add any embellishments or advertising to the flag. It should not be altered in any way.
- 5). Raise the flag to the highest peak of the flagpole. If you are displaying the flag at "half-staff," raise the flag to the highest peak before lowering it to half-staff. Half staff is the point that is halfway between the peak of the flagpole and the bottom of the pole. Only fly the flag at half-staff when ordered to do so by the President of the United States or your state governor.
- 6). Refrain from allowing the flag to touch the ground, even when lowering it.
- 7). Do not place any other flag of any type or pennant above the American flag. Only non-national flags -- state flags and society flags -- can be flown on the same flagpole as the American flag. If you are hanging other flags beside the American flag, the American flag should be the center flag. It should never be raised higher than another national flag. All national flags should be raised at the same height, and on different staffs. All national flags should also be of equal size.
- 8). Display the flag on your home from sunrise to sunset. If you don't want to remove the flag at sunset, you must illuminate the flag with lighting. The flag must be illuminated during all hours of darkness.
- 9). The flag may be flown flat against a wall or in the window of your home, with the Union to the flag's right. To an observer from the street, the Union would be to the left.

Remove the flag during inclement weather conditions, unless your flag is an all-weather flag.
