It was recorded that in 1963, a Buddhist monk titled Thich Quang Duc, orignated from this pagoda, made the world shocking with the extraordinary event. So, what did he do? He shocked the world by touring to Saigon; then he poured a can of gas over his head and lighted himseld on fire for the purpose of protesting American interference in the self-determination at the South of Vietnam.

After such an influential event, the image of a robed man, that sat cross-legged on the pavement and was consumed by flame, was vastly broadcasting on American televison. From then, the fame of Thien Mu Pagoda became famous worldwide together with the name of Thich Quang Duc.
