Nonepileptic Seizures Treatment

    Causes

    • Nonepileptic seizures are caused by a psychological problem. This results in a disruption in the brain function. This type of seizure can be due to extreme amounts of stress or depression, or can stem from a traumatic event in the patient's past.

    Diagnosis

    • Doctors use certain diagnosis criteria to differentiate among seizures, such as what happens during the seizures, what occurs afterward, how long they last and how intense they are.

    Treatment

    • The primary treatment goal for nonepileptic seizures is therapy. Therapy helps soothe the disturbances in the brain, whether the disturbances stem from a traumatic event, depression or stress. Anti-depression medications may also be prescribed.

    Time Frame

    • According to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, patients with nonepileptic seizures have a chance at never suffering a seizure again if they receive the proper treatment. Treatment may last as little as a year.

    Misconceptions

    • Nonepileptic seizures do not indicate that the person is faking a seizure. The seizures are actually occurring--there is only a different reason for their occurrence.
