Generac Power Washer Pump Maintenance

    Clogs

    • Check the inlet water connection screen for foreign debris and clean it if necessary. Check the screen for damage and replace it if it is damaged and it no longer screens out debris like it is supposed to do.

Clean out the occasional partially clogged spray nozzles, hoses, in-line screens or anywhere else a clog may occur in the system if you are experiencing pulsations in the water pressure while pressure washing. The pulsations are fluctuations between normal and too much water pressure in the system, going back and forth between the water pump and wherever the clog exists. Neglecting to clear out the clog damages the water pump.

    Storage

    • Protect the water pump from freezing temperatures and long periods of time, such as several months, without operating it by using Generac Pump Saver. Follow the directions on the container for proper amounts to pour into the water pump to protect its seals and pistons.

If Generac Pump Saver is not available, use a non-alcoholic RV antifreeze to maintain the Generac water pump. Pour it into a funnel that is emptying into one end of a 3-foot long garden hose while the other end of the garden hose is screwed into the water inlet connection on the water pump. Pull the recoil cord on the engine twice to pull an ample amount of RV antifreeze into the water pump for its protection.

    Oil

    • Station the pressure washer on a level surface. Use the water pump spy glass or open the water pump oil fill cap to ensure the oil in the water pump is at the proper level. The spy glass has a mark where the oil level should reach and, if you have to open the water pump oil fill cap, the oil level should reach just a hair above the internal parts you see within the water pump.

Fill Generac power washers outfitted with Cat pumps with Cat pump oil. Use Briggs and Stratton Universal pump oil to fill all other Generac power washer water pumps.

Change water pump oil once a year, provided no water pump problems warranted changing it sooner. Change water pump oil when seals or O-rings are replaced.
