Nancy Juetten started her public relations consulting, publicity mentoring, and information product business from home in 2001 with the goal to earn enough money to buy better groceries. Today, Nancy offers one-on-one mentoring, webinars, teleclasses and live seminars, and a variety of products to help businesses get known and get paid. She created Bye-Bye Boring Bio, a virtual workshop designed to help solo-preneurs get noticed  and the Get Known to Get Paid program that helps entrepreneurs, authors, coaches and other self-employed individuals “broadcast their brilliance” and get heard.

She has shared her storytelling and publicity expertise through media outlets such as CNN Radio, National Public Radio, the ABC Radio Network and more. Along with running her business and website, Authentic Visability, she works from home with her husband of 25-years with whom she raises her teenage son.

What made you decide to start a home business?

When my son was born, I had a reason to create a home based business so I could succeed on my own terms, outside the scope of the corporate cubicle.

Why did you start the business you did?

My corporate career in marketing, advertising, and public relations was how I honed the skills I use every day in my company that guides aspiring experts and authors to get known and paid for the expert status they own today and to do so in their own best way.

What steps did you take to get started?

I created a simple flyer with my brand promise. I also attended networking events where I had a good likelihood of meeting ideal clients. Finally, I gave free talks - educational based marketing.

How did you get your first customer/client?

Someone I met at a networking event turned out to be married to someone who was seeking a publicist for their growing company. I got invited to interview for the engagement, and I won it and served that client for three years.

How do you market your home business?

My favorite ways to build influence, impact and income for my business include joint venture partnerships, "power networking" with centers of influence, speaking (by webinar, teleclass, or live stage), information based marketing (via ezine, ebook), and - of course - the power of publicity.

What are your biggest challenges?

I get tripped up a bit by technology, delegation of tasks to others, and managing growth.

What are your biggest successes?

Creating a business model that works and generates desired income. I'm also proud to have earned national reputation as The Business Bio Expert and to have successfully moved away from the idea of a traditional publicity agency to an online business model.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I had started with a premium offering to serve my ideal client as opposed to leading with lower value offerings. It takes just as much effort to create a sale for a low end product as it does for a high end product.

Note from Leslie

Nancy took a skill she'd developed in the workplace to start her home business. Using a skill or talent you already have to create a service-based business is one of the fastest ways to get started in a home business. She follows her own advice by developing publicity messages that are funny or interesting, and definitely not boring. Finally, she has diversified her business to include speaking and information products.
