How to Ship a Vehicle Across the Country
- 1). Get a quote from a reputable car-moving company. One way to do this is to call the automobile transporters listed in your Yellow Pages. A more comprehensive way to find companies is to use a website such as CarShipping.com (The link is under References.) This web page not only contains links to dozens of transport sites but also lets you receive quotes via e-mail by filling out a form.
- 2). Ask for a copy of the shipper's insurance policy and study it. You want to be sure that your car is protected against damage and theft. What are the company's deductibles and claim procedures? Remember that verbal guarantees are worthless. Always get any promises in writing. Check with your own insurance company as well to see how it covers claims on a shipped vehicle.
- 3). Read the shipping contract carefully before signing it. In particular, look for the pickup and delivery dates, and what happens if the shipper cannot meet them. Ask for a waiver of any cancellation fee if your car is not picked up within the allotted time. However, be sure to allow at least a week beyond the stipulated date for pickup because delays can happen. Some companies may guarantee a rental if they are unable to meet the delivery date. This guarantee, however, typically costs extra.
- 4). Have your car serviced and put some gas in the tank. Make a complete set of car keys for the transport company and keep at least one set. Remove all personal belongings from the vehicle before the ship date. If possible, take pictures of your vehicle and any damage just before the transporter comes to haul your car away. (If your picture can't stamp the date and time, take shots of your vehicle with the pickup driver.) These pictures can prove to be a valuable asset should you file a claim.
