The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis (or New Cathedral as it's also known) is the headquarters of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. It is an active parish with daily and weekly Masses, but it's also much more. The Cathedral houses the largest collection of mosaics in the world, making it a popular tourist destination for thousands of visitors each year.

Location and Hours:

The Catheral Basilica is located in the Central West End at 4431 Lindell Boulevard. The church is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors who are not attending Mass are asked to refrain from walking around until Mass is over. Masses are celebrated Monday through Friday at 7 a.m., 8 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. Saturday Masses are at 8 a.m., and a vigil Mass at 5 p.m. Sunday Masses are at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

About the Mosaics:

The Cathedral Basilica is known for having the largest collection of mosaics in the the world. More than 41 million glass pieces cover 83,000 square feet of the walls and ceiling. It took hundreds of artists nearly 80 years to complete work on the mosaics, beginning in 1912 and ending in 1988. The mosaics depict various historical and biblical themes, including scenes from the Old and New Testament, and important moments in the life of Saint Louis IX, King of France and patron saint of the city.

Take a Tour:

Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour through the Cathedral, but for an even better experience, consider signing up for a guided tour.

As a general rule, guided tours are given Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. But keep in mind, the Cathedral is an active parish and guided tours will be cancelled for scheduled events like funerals, weddings or other special Masses. To learn more about the tour schedule and to make a reservation, call (314) 373-8241. Guided tours are also given most Sundays after noon Mass. No reservations are needed, just show up and join the group.

The Mosaic Museum:

To learn more about the Cathedral and its history, visit the Mosaic Museum in the lower level of the church. The museum has exhibits showing how the mosaics were made and put together. There are also displays of historic vestments, church treasures and the throne used by Pope John Paul II when he visited St. Louis in 1999. The Mosaic Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $2 a person for admission.
