For all their beauty and durability, clay and terra cotta roof-tiles are much like pieces of fine china or ceramic pottery, and can break, chip and crack.
Likewise, roof-tile replacement is more complicated than putting in replacement roof shingles on a composite roof.
Truthfully, it's best to leave the installation of replacement roof tiles to experienced professionals.
The material on replacement roof tiles presented here is meant to be of an informative nature only.
Step One: Gather Your Tools Before getting started, you will need to have the following materials and tools: oreplacement tiles odrill odisc grinder opry bar ohammer ochisel oscrewdriver oadhesive ogrout oputty knife The hammer and chisel will be used to remove the old grout between the broken tile and the ones to either side.
The pry bar is then employed to lift up on the offending tile and extract it.
If the broken or cracked tile has come loose, this may thankfully not be necessary; otherwise, it is important to go slow and carefully, or you may wind up installing several replacement roof-tiles.
Another way to get rid of a broken roof tile is to use the drill to make several holes the diameter of the screw driver, then use that for breaking up the old tile.
Step Two: Preparing The Space Once again, you'll be using the hammer and chisel as well as the disc grinder in order to get rid of all old debris, old grout and adhesive and anything else that could prevent a good fit of the new roof-tile replacement.
It is extremely important that replacement-tiles fit exactly, or the desired results will not be achieved.
Because of this, the roof-tile replacement should be carefully test fitted.
All replacement roof tiles are created from identical molds, but there is always the chance of a "one-off.
" Likewise, attempting to trim replacement roof tiles is unwise, as this could cause them to become weakened and crack, resulting in the need for new replacement roof shingles.
Step Three: Completing the Job Once an accurate fit has been assured, it's time to set the replacement-tiles in place.
Replacement roof shingles should be coated thoroughly with the appropriate amount of adhesive and slid into place, pressing down carefully and insuring they are level.
After replacement tiles have cured for at least twenty four hours, new grout can be applied in order to fill in any gaps.
