Toilet Flapper Problems: Slow Flushing

    • 1). Shut off the water to your toilet by turning the handle on the pipe right behind your toilet counterclockwise.

    • 2). Open the lid to the toilet tank behind the seat by lifting it off and carefully setting it down on the ground. Locate the flapper valve at the bottom of the tank, and the flapper chain connected to it. This chain is connected to a lifting rod, which is connected in turn to the handle. When the handle is pressed down, the rod lifts up, pulling the chain and raising the flapper.

    • 3). Adjust the chain by unhooking it from the lifting rod and rehooking it to the rod two or three links down the chain. This tightens the chain so the flapper raises sooner, rather than later when the handle is pushed. It will also cause the flapper to lift up higher when the handle is depressed, increasing the amount of water flow into the toilet.

    • 4). Turn on the water, flush the toilet and judge your results. If the toilet still flushes slowly, clean out the fill holes underneath the rim of the seat with pipe cleaners or a scrub brush to loosen and remove sediment deposits that might be slowing water flow to the bowl.
