    Build a swing set frame

    • 1). Choose a plan. Plans for more elaborate swing sets can be bought online for $10 to $15, and home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowe's often sell kits and plans. Designs range from a simple frame to a swing set attached to a fort or playhouse.

    • 2). Select a safe spot to build a simple swing set frame. Make sure it is away from any buildings, trees or other objects the swing could collide with. Make sure there are no protrusions from the ground that could hurt the child or swinger in a fall. Find the levelest place possible.

    • 3). Dig two holes about 2 1/2 feet deep and 10 inches in diameter to build a simple two-swing frame. The four support poles should be about 9 feet long. The crossbar should be about 8 feet long. Slant the holes so that when inserted, the tops of the support poles will meet at about a 30-degree angle. Dig two identical holes 8 feet from the first pair and parallel to them.

    • 4). Put a layer of gravel on the bottom of the holes for water drainage. Insert each pole into its hole. Fill the hole halfway with water, then pour in the concrete. Use the shovel to ensure the water and concrete mix completely. Let the concrete dry about 24 hours before proceeding.

    • 5). Drill two holes in each end of the crossbeam pole, placed so a bolt can be driven through each of the support poles into the crossbeam holes. Drill holes through the support poles that line up with the crossbeam holes. Use the long bolts to attach the poles to the crossbeam tightly at each end.

    • 6). Place the two cross braces, which should be about 3 feet long, horizontally across each pair of support poles so that the ends are against each pole. Drill holes through the cross braces and into the support poles, and use the shorter bolts to attach them tightly.
