Although Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is primarily known for its Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches, locals and tourists can find an ample amount of pizzeria establishments in the City of Brotherly Love. Restaurants serve pizza in neighborhoods throughout the city, including the downtown district, the University of Pennsylvania area, and Kensington. After dining on a pizza pie, you can check out Philadelphia's historic attractions, such as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. - Situated in the Kensington area, Tacconelli's Pizzeria is less than a mile away from the Delaware Expressway in eastern Philadelphia. This restaurant is a casual, neighborhood-style restaurant, and has been a family-operated establishment since the 1940s. The dining room has brick walls, which reflects the history of the building. Lunch and dinner are served every day of the week. Popular menu items include the original Tomato Pie--a pizza with only marinara sauce--and the White Pie--which has mozzarella cheese and garlic. Guests are allowed to bring their own bottle of wine or beer. The restaurant does not have a large staff, so you may have to wait longer than usual for your pizza to be done.
- La Fourno Pizza is in the heart of downtown Philadelphia within walking distance of Washington Square. According to the South Philly Review, this pizzeria has an open kitchen that is visible from the street, and the dining room has an informal, casual atmosphere. Also, the restaurant's pizza is baked in a brick oven and served with a thin crust. Lunch and dinner is served every day of the week, and reservations are accepted but not required. The usual crowd are families and students from nearby Thomas Jefferson University. The menu includes pizza La Fourno, which has fresh garlic and sun-dried tomatoes, and Pucillo--a mozzarella-covered pie with peppers, pepperoni and Italian sausage. Take-out and delivery services are offered.
- Allegro Pizza is in western Philly, across the street from the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. This casual restaurant is a popular hang-out spot for the university's students and faculty as well as residents in the Spruce Hill neighborhood. Allegro prepares thick, Sicilian and thin-crusted Neapolitan-style pizza pies for lunch and dinner every day of the week. Among the Sicilian pizzas is the Sicilian Special, which features Italian sausage, pepperoni, peppers and mushroom toppings. Neapolitan pizza toppings include ground beef, and tomatoes, and a 28-inch pizza is available for groups. The restaurant also provides a catering service.
- The casual Zio's is in downtown Philadelphia, two blocks southeast of City Hall. This restaurant does not have a large dining room, and is primarily a stopping point for Thomas Jefferson University students and downtown workers who want to grab a quick bite to eat. The restaurant is open for dinner as well, and provides complimentary delivery service in the downtown area. The menu offers pizza pies and pizza-style dishes, which include strombolis and calzones. Some of the more requested pizza items include the White Potato--a pie with grilled potato, mozzarella cheese and eggs--and the South Philly, which resembles a Philly cheesesteak with steak and cheese.
