Established:
The Art Gallery of Ontario (Musée des beaux-arts de l’Ontario)(AGO) was established in 1900 and is one of the largest art museums in North America. In 2008, a new expansion was created by architect Frank Gehry.
The Museum has more than 80,000 works in its collection, dating from 100 A.D. to the present.
History:
In 1900, a group of private citizens established the Art Museum of Toronto which is today's Art Gallery of Ontario.
In 1911, it acquired the Grange Building through a private bequest.
Over the years, the Museum has undergone several expansions.
Mission:

Location:
The Art Gallery of Ontario is located in Chinatown at 317 Dundas Street, in West Toronto. It is also conveniently located, so that it is easy to access by bike, car or on foot. The nearest subway stop is the St. Patrick stop on the Yonge-University-Spadina line. The number 505 Dundas streetcar stops at the Museum's entrance.
Museum's Conservation Department:
According to the Art Gallery of Ontario's website: "Conservation is the care and protection of cultural objects.
As the caretakers of collections, conservators examine, research, clean and repair artworks, while also taking action to prevent future deterioration. Here at the AGO, the Conservation Team includes conservators, mat makers, framers and mount makers. These specialists work together to ensure each work will look its best not only for today, but also for generations to come."
Famed Artworks in Collection:
The Museum is known for its fine collection of Canadian art, especially its collection of Inuit art and includes work by Canadian artists such as Lucius O'Brien, David Milne, Emily Carr, Joyce Wieland, and Kenojuak Ashevak.
The collection also includes acquisitions by European masters such as Anthony van Dyck, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent van Gogh.
Other notable works include Peter Paul Rubens' 17th-century masterpiece The Massacre of the Innocents.
Contemporary art is well represented in the collection and includes all media such as painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, projection art, and installation art. Works by Canadian artists David Altmejd, Brian Jungen, Jeff Wall, and Shirley Wiitasalo are included. Major works by artists Gerhard Richter, Doris Salcedo, Tino Sehgal, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, and Andy Warhol are in the collection.
The AGO is also notable for having the world's largest public collection of works by British sculptor Henry Moore.
