One of the best things about children is that they are often easily charmed with simple, sometimes everyday objects. Keep this characteristic in mind when planning a birthday party. By saving money on the overall party, you can invite more guests, provide more food and hand out party favors. Although budget parties can sometimes involve more planning and preparation, if money is a priority then it will be well worth it. To save money on party favors and decorations, shop at the dollar store. - If your child's birthday party tends to fall in favorable weather, consider hosting a party at the local park. Most parks do not require party fees unless you reserve a gazebo, picnic shelter or other designated area. Even then, costs tend to be relatively low. Grill hot dogs and hamburgers for an inexpensive lunch, or you can simply provide cake and ice cream. Toddlers and young children will be content playing at the playground and running around in open areas. Older children might enjoy a scavenger hunt or other organized games. If your son or daughter enjoys sports, you could include a sports theme and organize a tournament. You might want to ask a few parents to help chaperon to make sure that no children wander off during the party.
- If you have a large enough space in your home, consider hosting a dance party for your child's birthday. For example, a '50s at the hop theme is a fun way to decorate and kids tend to love the music. Send out homemade invitations with a '50s theme and invite guests to wear poodle skirts and other '50s attire. Before the party, make up a playlist with appropriate music for the dance. You can even have a dance contest with trophies or other awards for the winners. Provide snacks and punch and end the party with gifts, cake and ice cream.
- A movie theme is particularly practical for older kids. Start off the party with fun movie and theater games, such as charades. Guests can even come dressed as their favorite movie characters. Then get the popcorn popping and turn down the lights for movie time. (Make sure all the parents approve of the movie you are showing to avoid any conflicts.) If your child only invited guests of the same gender, you can set up sleeping bags and follow the movie with a sleepover party. If not, finish off the party with cake and ice cream, as well as presents.
- Hosting a costume party is one way to have a theme birthday party without spending too much on decorations. Invite guests to dress up in princess, superhero, sports players, Hawaiian-themed, medieval or other costumes of your child's choice. Have a costume contest with prizes for the best-dressed guest. Plan all your games and party events to correspond with the theme.
