- 1). Get your degree. A bachelor of science degree is the minimum essential requirement to start on the path to becoming a certified network technician. It's better to earn a degree in a specific field connected to technology, such as computer science or something related to engineering. This specialization isn't necessary to get a job in the field, but your dedication to computers will look impressive on your resume. If you're still in high school, pay close attention to the fields of physics and mathematics.
- 2). Earn your certification for certain specialties in the technology field. Some companies have established programs that allow you to earn certification in a specific kind of computer process or technology that will give you an edge when looking for a job. Novell offers a certification program and exam that will qualify you as a Certified NetWare Engineer (CNE), which tells employers you possess a level of proficiency in Novell's NetWare technology. There are many other major computer companies offering similar programs in their own technology, all of which will make you more desirable over those prospective employees who lack such certification.
- 3). Search for a network technician job in trade journals or newspapers. Many technical colleges and universities have these available for perusal, and if you're still in school or are a recent graduate you can take advantage of any job placement programs they have available. Some major companies place in-house ads for technicians rather than a general advertisement in newspapers. If you contact their Human Resources department they will be able to give you contact information to send your resume. You can also search online at Monster.com and other job-searching sites. If you choose this method, it's recommended to narrow down the millions of search results by including your certification so the jobs offered better reflect your talent.
