How to Photograph Soup

    • 1). Gather up the soup you want to use. You might choose to pour soup into a bowl or leave it in the can. If you leave it in the can, you may choose soups depending on their labels. If you plan to use the soup itself, gather up soup depending on their color, consistency and content.

    • 2). Consider an interesting color or shape if you pour your soup into a bowl. This will add interest to your photograph.

    • 3). Stage your photographs for interest. You can use interesting props, ladles, pans. You can stack soup cans on top of one another. You can set your scene on a table, counter, an interesting tablecloth or anywhere else. You can be as conventional (soup on a table) or unconventional (soup on the top of a mountain) as you want to be.

    • 4). Get creative with how you position your soup for the photograph. You can spill soup onto a table, or create a fountain effect by photographing an overturned open soup can pouring into a bowl. In this instance, use a high speed setting on your camera to catch the splashing look of your soup without allowing for a blur.

    • 5). Introduce people or animals into your shot of soup. First and foremost, people love to see pictures of people more than anything else. Adding a person in your photo pouring soup, eating soup, or making soup will instantly add interest to your shot.

    • 6). Consider your lighting. There is no one lighting that will work best with your soup. If using a flash, avoid photographing too closely as the flash might wash out the color of the soup when it reflects the light. Likewise, if you use a flash too closely on a soup can label it will become difficult to read.
