What to Do When You Son Tells You His Girlfriend is Pregnant
To have your son come and tell you his girlfriend is pregnant is not something you want to hear.
It is obvious though that you have a good relationship with him because he felt comfortable in telling you.
At this point though you must determine if he is accepting his responsibility in this situation.
If he is of the attitude of it is not his, or it is her fault, or he is too young, then you need to get the facts straight and be sure he is thinking responsibly.
If he truly feels that he is not responsible for the pregnancy then you need to determine why he feels this way.
Are there other circumstances that would support this? For example, does the girl have a record of dating other boys? Is your son just frightened and does not want to face whats happen? These are things you are only going to be able to determine by talking it through with him.
How he handles this will of course be determined on how the girl is going to handle the situation.
No matter what though if the possibility exists at all that he is the Father then the parents of the girl need to be approached.
Mind you, how this situation is approached will all depend on the ages of both parties.
If they are in their twenties, it will be quite different then if they are in their teens.
One thing is for sure though as a parent you cannot assume this responsibility.
No matter what the circumstances your son must make his own decisions and accept whatever responsibility he has.
Your job as a parent is to put him on the right track.
Encourage him to get all of the details and facts together.
Try to determine that he is thinking as logically as possible and not reacting out of fear or anger.
If he knows that you are there to support his decisions but not his actions then he will think more clearly.
In the event though that the child is definitely his you cannot support a decision to just walk away from the situation.
Both parties are equally responsible here.
You must also make sure that your son is allowed some impute into how the situation is going to be rectified.
The girl will no doubt base some of her decisions on the attitude of your son.
