Christmas Ornament Crafts for Kids
- Children will enjoy decorating the Christmas tree even more if they have made some of the ornaments themselves. Homemade ornaments will make your tree more personal, and make you smile each year when you get them out. These ornaments you and your children make together will provide meaningful family memories for years to come.
- Artistic, creative children will enjoy painting their own ornaments. You can paint the inside or the outside of clear glass ornaments. To paint the inside, remove the hanger or lid from the ornament, and squeeze acrylic paint inside. Then roll the ornament around to spread the paint across the inside surface. Use more than one color to create a marbled look. You can also paint directly on the ornament's exterior surface with acrylic paint and small paintbrushes. Paint Christmas images, such as Santa and his reindeer or a Christmas tree, or have each member of the family write her name on an ornament.
- Create small clay ornaments with modeling clay that you bake in the oven. Kits come with a variety of colors and are available at craft stores. Make small Christmas trees, animals, gingerbread men or reindeer to hang on your tree. Help your children with the oven baking process.
- Purchase clear plastic ornaments that you can take apart into two halves. Fill the ornaments with small family photographs, pieces of wrapping paper, handwritten notes or memories and ribbon or glitter, and then close them again.
- Decorating felt or craft foam ornaments works well for younger children. You will have to help them cut the basic shapes out of the material, however. Look for felt or craft foam in a variety of colors, and then cut out Christmas tree or Santa shapes. Decorate the shapes with acrylic paint or glitter glue pens, and cut a hole at the top for a ribbon or hook. You can also decorate felt ornaments with smaller shapes cut out of felt, using a hot glue gun to attach them. But be careful when using this tool around children.
- Make ornaments that look like snow globes using small, clear plastic cups. Help children glue small plastic Christmas figurines and white glitter to a piece of cardstock slightly larger than the top of the plastic cup, then glue the cup upside down onto the cardstock. You can attach a ribbon or hook to the top of the cup with hot glue, or by looping it through two small pinholes in the plastic.
