Camping and motorhome holidays - the great outdoors!
When I was a kid, we used to go camping a lot. Each and every time was a great experience with something new happening - treacherous weather, creepy crawlies and cold sleeping bags are all part of the fun; especially when you're a child!
Tent holidays are great fun for families that don't mind "roughing it" a little, disposing of home comforts and getting back to nature for a few nights. It can also be very educative for the kids and a lot of lessons can be learnt. We take comfort, heating and electricity for granted so much, and it can be an educational shock to the system when these comforts are removed. If there was one downside to tent holidays that springs to mind, it's the trouble we had putting them up. On one occasion we even requested help from a neighbouring tent - very embarrassing!
I remember my grandfather bought a VW camper van that could sleep a number of people. Along with the fact this vehicle was super cool due to its 60's/70's fame, it was actually a comfortable bed and offered a great compromise between being cold in a tent and being pampered in a hotel.
As I grew up I did less travelling with my family and tent holidays were pretty much over with. My grandparents however, continued touring the country in their camper van and staying over in various places. Being situated on the coast, my family also owned a huge caravan that they would rent out to tourists in the summer. This was part of a collection of other caravans and motorhomes that would be hired out each year. Quite often caravan holidays are associated with cheesy family entertainment and cheap getaways, but this simply isn't the case anymore. A mobile home can be used to explore the country or even further afield. I once met a couple that travelled around Europe in a motorhome. They travelled for 6 months through 5 countries. Motorhomes need not be an expensive venture either as you can hire then for various periods of time.
I intend on doing just that in later life. I can't imagine anything more exhilarating than the open road and the freedom to go where I want and see what I want. I think this kind of excursion offers a lot more freedom than your standard package holiday that commands you stay in the same hotel for 2 weeks. The possibility to explore lesser-trodden territories is almost limitless and played correctly could be a lot less costly.
