How to Replace Cables in a Shimano Pod Shifter
- 1). Lift the rear of the bicycle so the rear wheel can spin freely.
- 2). Operate the gear shifter repeatedly or until the shift cable is given maximum slack. Following each shift, rotate the pedals forward to transfer the chain to the next gear.
- 3). Lower the bicycle and lean the left, nondrive side against a wall for support.
- 4). Follow the Shimano pod shift cable to its derailleur, where the cable terminates. A bolt secures the cable to the derailleur.
- 5). Use a 5 mm Allen key and loosen the bolt that secures the shift cable to the derailleur.
- 6). Use cable cutters to cut away the aluminum cap at the end of the cable.
- 7). Return to the gear shifter. Locate the screw on the shifter pod that obscures the cable head. The screw is directly opposite where the cable enters the pod.
- 8). Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw and reveal the cable head.
- 9). Push the cable up through shifter so the head emerges from the shifter. Grasp the cable and pull it free of the shifter.
- 1). Pass the new cable through the guide hole in the shifter. Pull the other end to seat the cable head inside the pod shifter.
- 2). Replace the screw that covers the cable head. Turn it clockwise with the Phillips screwdriver until it stops.
- 3). Route the cable to the derailleur so its path is identical to that followed by the former cable.
- 4). Pull the end of the cable tight. Use the 5 mm Allen key to tighten the derailleur cable bolt onto the cable, securing it to the derailleur.
- 5). Cut the end of the cable about 2 to 3 inches past the bolt.
- 6). Fit a cap onto the end of the cable. Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the end cap onto the cable.
