How to Set a Table with Silverware
- 1). Put the dinner plate in the middle of the place mat if you are using one or right in front of the chair if using a table cloth.
- 2). Set the salad plate on the dinner plate with the soup bowl on top of it. Of course, if you will not have either of these courses, leave it out. Also, if you plan on serving salad before the soup, keep the soup bowls off the table until ready to serve.
- 3). Start the top row in the left corner with the bread plate. Set the butter knife attractively on the plate.
- 4). Place the coffee cup at the top right corner of the plate, arranging the other three glasses in a semi-circle around it. Some people prefer to place the napkin in the wine or water glass.
- 5). Place the forks to the left hand side of the plate. The salad fork goes on the far left, followed by the dinner fork, with the dessert fork next to the plate. If you plan on placing napkins in napkin holders, place them to the left of the salad fork.
- 6). Place the knife and spoons on the right hand side of the plate. The knife goes next to the plate, edge facing inward, followed by the small spoon and the soup spoon on the edge.
