How to Knit Cozies
- 1). Select the materials for the cozy. If you want to protect your hands from heat or insulate an item, choose a bulky-weight yarn. For a less functional and more decorative item, pick a lighter yarn, such as a cotton blend. Check the yarn packaging to find out what size knitting needles you need to use.
- 2). Measure around the item to determine width, and cast on a number of stitches that corresponds to this measurement. For a cup cozy using medium-weight yarn, for example, you should cast on 39 stitches.
- 3). Begin knitting with the rib stitch. This alternating pattern of knit and purl stitches will give your cozy a snug yet stretchy fit. Work in this pattern for the first inch.
- 4). Continue knitting in the style of your choice. You can continue the rib stitch or switch to garter stitch (knit every row) or stockinette stitch (alternating rows of knit and purl).
- 5). Knit until you have reached the desired length and then bind off all stitches. Leave a long tail of around 5 inches for sewing up.
- 6). Assemble the cozy by sewing the two ends together. Weave in any excess yarn and slip the finished cozy over the item.
