Clinical trials were done to test the efficacy of the product for stretch marks, but then, according to Gina Gay, spokesperson for Klein-Becker (the product's distributor), the success of Strivectin-SD is just "dumb luck." The story goes that when they first gave friends and family samples of the cream to try, it was labeled "topical cream," which caused confusion as to what it was for and some of them began using it on their face as a moisturizer! The rumour mill spread like wildfire and, although the cream was marketed "intensive concentrate for existing stretch marks," it became a secret beauty tool for many women (and men) in the know in 2002. Strivectin-SD began selling in high-end retail stores like Sephora and then was found in Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue.
