Four Terrible Superhero Movies

105 5
The last decade has seen a great many superhero blockbusters in the theater. And due to this popular and commercial success, Hollywood has flocked to the genre to cash in. Of course this means that there are many films that were created as a cash grab, or miss the mark for other reasons. This article will cover five of these terrible superhero movies.
Batman and Robin (1997)
Joel Schumacher's sins in this film are many. The rotten tomatoes score of 12% should give you an idea of what to expect. Clooney, who played Batman in the film has even apologized publicly for the film. If you were lucky enough to miss this one, do not watch it. The film is over the top and unbearable in so many ways, even taking the fact that it is a superhero movie. As one reviewer put it "there are so many things wrong with this movie, it is useless to count them". A reasonable assessment, however, if you must have a specific point of criticism, here are two; Schumacher put nipples on the batsuit.
Catwoman (2004)
With so many stellar performances of Catwoman from TV to the silver screen, this role must have been irresistible for Halle Berry. And she could have done pretty well if not for the abysmal script. The scriptwriter even felt the need to change her name from Selina Kyle to Patience Phillips. Catwoman scored a 9% on rotten tomatoes. The role even garnered her a Razzie award for Worst Actress, which Berry had enough of a sense of humor to accept personally.
Superman 3 (1983)
The first two installments of the series were pretty solid films to follow, but this third installment took a turn for the worse. The movie is slapstick up and down. The comedian Richard Pryor was cast to play the villain of the film. That would be like casting Chris Rock or Dane Cook to be the villain in the next Batman movie, there is just no way to make it work. If you really love superman or are a fan of slapstick this film, which scored a 24% on rotten tomatoes may appeal to you.
Green Lantern (2011)
This comic series is long lived and has always existed on the fringe of popularity. Always outshined by mainstream comics such as Spiderman, Superman, and Batman, Green lantern has always had a cult audience. That cult audience may be able to appreciate this film simply because it does star the hero of the book, but others will see a poorly constructed superhero movie. This split can be seen in the twenty percentage point difference between the critic and fan scores on rotten tomatoes (27% versus 47%).
So as you can plainly see, sometimes Hollywood can be the ultimate villain when it comes to superheroes. Making a great superhero movie is a balancing act between giving the diehard fans what they want and creating a movie that will have mass appeal as well.
