How to Insulate Water Spigots

    • 1). Seal the area where the water spigot goes through the exterior wall with silicone caulk and a caulk gun. This helps prevent cold outdoor air from blowing directly on the pipe at the point of entry into the wall.

    • 2). Turn the shut-off valve for the spigot to the “Off” position. If you have a crawl space, the shut-off valve is behind the wall on the pipe leading to the outdoor water spigot. If you do not have a crawl space, the shut-off valve is near your main shut-off, usually in a basement or laundry room area. Open the spigot to allow any remaining water in the line to drain out. Close the spigot when no more water is draining.

    • 3). Wrap insulation around the water spigot pipe in the crawl space, and secure the insulation with duct tape or electrical tape. Wrap the clear pipe plastic wrap over the insulation tightly, starting from the wall and working back to the end of the spigot pipe. This keeps moisture off the insulation.

    • 4). Install the foam pipe insulation over the spigot pipe. The foam pipe insulation has a slice down the length that enables you to simply push the insulation over the pipe.

    • 5). Slide an insulated faucet cover over the outside water spigot and secure it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Some outside covers are soft and use a string to secure them to the spigot. Hard covers have a wing nut or screw to fasten it to the spigot.
