Scooter Tips
- Just because you are riding a scooter does not mean you can get by without wearing protective equipment. When riding, bugs and debris can get into your eye, so wearing protective eyewear such as goggles is recommended. Also, you will want to wear clothes that can protect you in a fall. Due to the speed of most scooters, leather equipment is not required, but definitely wear jeans and heavy shoes that cover the toes when riding. Wearing a helmet in case of a fall is also a must. If you are particularly worried about safety at night, wear high-visibility clothing such as neon vests.
- Before going out onto the road with your scooter, have the license required to ride your scooter on the road. This will depend on the area you live in, so check with your local government. Licensing will also depend on the engine size in your scooter, know your exact model when checking with your local driver's license agency. Most places in the USA will require some form of insurance for your scooter, whether you need a license or not. You will also have to register your scooter and get plates for it so it can be easily identified.
- Get used to the controls and their layout on your scooter. This will vary between models, so look at your owner's manual to find out the location of the important controls. Adjust the bike's controls so that they fit the size of your reach. You should never have to stretch to reach the controls. Use the turn signals, horn and headlamp controls. Start the bike and drive slowly in a secluded area. Practice with the brake so that you learn to brake using both the front and the back controls every time. You want to make sure that you do not flip yourself over the front of the scooter.
