Facebook has skyrocketed in popularity to become one of the top 5 websites on the internet.
With over 200 million users, Facebook has asserted its reign at the top of the social media world.
How in the heck did this phenomenon originate?  Facebook was created by a Harvard student named Mark Zuckerberg in 2003.
The first name that Zuckerberg gave to the site was Facemash, as the purpose of the site was for college students to compare two faces side by side and vote on which one was more attractive.
Zuckerberg then broadened the scope of the website, creating 'the facebook', a literal Facebook for all Harvard students.
By 2004, about half of Harvard's undergraduate students were using Zuckerberg's new creation.
Shortly after, word spread to many of the other Ivy League schools including Yale and Columbia.
As word was rapidly spreading, the base of operations decided to move to California and officially open the website facebook.
com.
The company wisely chose to target high school students, which quickly helped the site to capture some of the market share owned by MySpace.
As the popularity of the site spread amongst high schoolers, the twenty and thirty-something crowd began to catch onto the trend, along parents of teenagers.
Facebook has quickly exploded into a worldwide phenomenon that has completely transformed the way we interact with one another, market our businesses, and stay connect on a global scale.
All signs point to continued growth, as Facebook has become more popular than MySpace.
The only real competition is from Twitter, which is a much smaller site but one that is growing at an incredibly rapid rate.
Many people use both Facebook and Twitter, and some even link both accounts so tweets are automatically sent as posts on Facebook.
Facebook is a worldwide social media phenomenon.
If you are one of the few who haven't checked it out, you may find it to be a useful resource in your life.
