    Vertigo Exercise 1

    • While a host of medical treatments exist for the treatment of vertigo, there are also exercises that can be done to help relieve symptoms when an attack occurs. The simplest exercise involves standing straight up with your arms at your side. Hold the position for around 20 seconds, then sit down and rest until the dizziness settles and you feel better. Stand up again and repeat the exercise. Another variation on this simple exercise involves standing up straight with feet together and arms by the side. Swivel your head from side to side. Take a break and then repeat. Do one set with eyes closed and the next set with your eyes open. Repeat until vertigo feelings subside.

    Swaying Exercises

    • Stand up straight with feet together. Once you are balanced start swaying from side, keeping your feet still and your balance correct. It may take a while to practice but you need to achieve the proper swaying motion before moving onto the next step of the exercise. The next step involves rotating your body 360 degrees while keeping your feet still and holding your balance. After rotating, try walking in a straight line. Repeat until feelings of vertigo subside.

    Other Treatments

    • Sit on the edge of table then lie down on one side until the vertigo resolves. Sit up and then lie down on the other side. Repeat the exercise until the symptoms no longer occur. The causes of vertigo vary. One cause and perhaps the most common is called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or BPPV. Vertigo can also be caused by an inner ear infection, Meniere's disease or Acoustic Neuroma brought on by a tumor. Vertigo can also be attributed to head trauma or a decreased flow of blood to the brain, bleeding into the brain or multiple sclerosis. In some cases, although exercises will help, medical treatment is required via either drugs, intravenously or with a patch inserted on the skin. Common mediation that can only be taken under supervision of a doctor includes Valium, Antivert, Benadryl and Phenergan.
