    • 1). Add a cap full of vegetable oil to your horse's feed at every meal. This will increase the fatty acids in the coat and bring out the natural hair in the horse's coat.

    • 2). Use a shedding blade to remove the horse's winter hair when the weather begins to turn warmer. A shedding blade is a tool specifically designed to remove excess hair.

    • 3). Mix a quality horse shampoo with warm water and apply it liberally to your horse using a large sponge. Work the shampoo into a lather and rub it into the coat to lift away any ground in dirt and sweat.

    • 4). Rinse your horse with clean water from a hose or a bucket. Be sure to remove all the shampoo from the horse's coat. You may need to rinse the horse several times to get all of the shampoo out of the coat.

    • 5). Apply a quality conditioner to your horse's coat. Be sure to follow the label directions. Some conditioners are used at full strength while others must be diluted in water.

    • 6). Comb your horse's mane and tail with a mane and tail comb. Start at the bottom of the mane, comb a small portion, then slowly work your way up. Remove any tangles as you work.
