Feeding a Dog - Why a Dog Feeding Schedule?

103 19
Feeding a dog on a regular schedule is just as important as the nutritional value of the food in his or her diet.
Your dog's age, activity level and health should determine daily feeding times in order to maintain an optimal health routine.
Most older dogs eat one large meal daily, but sometimes splitting the quantity given and timing of meals can be a very good option.
Nutritional requirements in older dogs will change as time passes but their needs usually resemble those of most adult dogs.
You should be aware of this and use flexibility when feeding your dog.
Young dogs should be fed more frequently than adult dogs and nursing puppies need to be allowed to nurse whenever they desire.
As they wean off of milk and transition to solid food, they may need four or even five small meals daily.
Once your pup becomes acclimated to whole foods and appears to be thriving, the feeding times can be decreased to three times a day and the amount of food increased if necessary.
The most important element in this whole concept is the consistency of the time when your dog eats.
Feeding times should be maintained daily and not changed radically, if possible.
Feeding time is an important part of your dog's day and is a necessary component in his or her overall well being.
Creating and maintaining a regular feeding schedule for your dog can be as important to him or her as a healthy and nutritious diet.
Also, this will really help you to house train your dog and will facilitate you in establishing a regular elimination schedule, as well.
A well fed, well trained dog is a happy dog...
and that means a happy you too!!!:-) Be sure to always provide fresh water for your dog daily...
especially in the warmer months.
