A long time has passed since the wheelchair vans of yesteryearthe time someone else had to lift up, fold up and store for you. Nowadays you never even have to leave your chair! You can get in and out of a wheelchair van using a lift device or a ramp that automatically unfolds for you. However, lets discuss mobility lifts, as these are arguably the most popular features about mobility vehicles in the first place.

The platform lift raises a wheelchair and its user into air so that he or she does not require a ramp. The driver just overcomes the step and enters the vehicle, where he or she can comfortably wheel over to the drivers seat. These lifts may be either single or dual arm operated. Single-arm units are typically used for side-entry conversions. They also take up less space. Unfortunately, they cannot lift as much as dual-arm operators. Though the dual-armed system is more powerful it also takes up more interior space, which will affect passenger seating and perhaps even block the side entry point.

It is good to know that mobility lifts are tightly regulated by law, including organizations like National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Mobility lifts and the safe operation of them was even argued in court, most notably with the 2005 case of Dilworth v. the City of Detroit.

What about you? What do you need to know about mobility lifts? A wheelchair lift does tend to be more expensive than a ramp system. Nevertheless, there are affordable conversions for both technologies. Deciding between these two technologies may also affect your ability to park, as you may have to choose between a side or rear-entry vehicles. Some people dont like lifts because they lose control of the situation, whereas ramp systems actually allow you the power to roll yourself in and out of the vehicle. It really depends on your preferences, because all mobility conversions are safeits against the law to have a faulty mechanism installed on a van for sale.

If you are interested in learning more about mobility lifts then talk to a mobility dealer who works with new model cars and vans and new conversions. Remember, these vehicles can be bought for cash, rented or even leased through a third party financer. Why not reach out this season and take advantage of the incentives that come your way? You may be just a few hours away from a new luxury mobility van!
