    Balance

    • Determine your center of gravity when sitting in a wheelchair. Because you're not just balancing yourself but also the chair, be highly aware of stability and equilibrium.

    Reaching

    • When reaching to pick something off the floor, pick it up from the side rather than reaching forward between your knees. Also, make sure the wheels are locked to avoid unwanted movement and straining.

    Curbs

    • Try to avoid going over curbs by looking for ramps or other handicapped-accessible entryways. If you need to negotiate a curb, use assistance.

    Inclines

    • Don't overestimate your strength when it comes to going up and down hills. Know your limitations before attempting an incline.

    Traveling

    • When traveling in a wheelchair, it is important to understand the tie-downs and locking mechanisms that handicapped-accessible vehicles come equipped with. When possible, transfer the disabled person to a standard vehicle seat and use a regular seat belt. However, because transfer it isn't always possible or logical, make sure the wheelchair is secured properly and facing forward.
