Waltham Sheep Shearing Festival
- Dave Kennard of the Wellscroft Farm shows guests how herding takes place on the range. The Kennard family farm has thrived as one of New England's largest working sheep farms since 1975. The Kennard family and their staff perform yearly at the festival, hosting entertaining and informative herding demonstrations. Using his border collies, Kennard puts on a show to herd not only his sheep but ducks as well.
- Over 70 crafters sell their hand-made wares yearly at the festival. You'll find everything from birdhouses to jewelry to artwork. Anyone is able to apply for a booth at the crafts fair and the money gained from renting craft space goes toward the organizers' mission of preserving the 1806 estate where the festival takes place.
- An early American military encampment is recreated by Colonel Bailey's Second Massachusetts Regiment. Founded in 1974, the regiment celebrates America's heritage through first-hand experience, recreating the events of the American Revolutionary War. Featuring re-enactors of all ages, the 90-member Second Massachusetts Regiment educates and entertains viewers on the subject of 18th century life during a time of war.
- Sheep shearing is a highlight at the festival. Since 2008, professional sheep shearer Kevin Ford has amused onlookers by performing an old technique of shearing by hand. Andy Rice, also associated with the festival since 2008, demonstrates modern shearing by using a tool that limits risks of accidentally cutting the sheep. Other animals, including llamas, are also sheared throughout the day.
- The festival offers a variety of food options throughout the event. There are three food vendors located throughout the festival grounds, offering meal options, snacks and desserts. Fiouna Catering supplies delicious Persian cuisine, with Mr. Kielbaski serving hot and cold Polish food. Chipstix fried potato chips are a must try snack for all visitors, while dessert is offered at both the Hot Apple Bun House and Dems Dog House.
