Strategos
Definition:
The strategos was a military leader in Athens. The strategoi gradually replaced the archons in importance. The strategoi were part of the reorganization of the tribal system under Cleisthenes. Each of the ten tribal units was under a strategos. In the 5th century B.C., the strategoi had political as well as military importance with access to the ekklesia (assembly). They were elected officials.
