How to Get Rid of Mildew Odors
- 1). Locate the mildew. Mildew appears as dark, greenish-black spots or streaks. Mildew tends to grow in humid areas such as bathroom caulking, on ceilings, behind furniture, beneath floorboards and rugs, along the tops and bottoms of walls and around dishwashers, laundry machines, refrigerators, freezers and in other moist areas.
- 2). Fill a spray bottle with white distilled vinegar.
- 3). Spray the mildew with vinegar and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes.
- 4). Wet a sponge and sprinkle with baking soda. Scrub the mildew.
- 5). Wipe away loosened mildew with a wet rag. Discard rag.
- 6). Prevent future mildew growth. Remember to run bathroom fans during and after showers. Install dehumidifiers in rooms with high humidity.
- 7). Utilize an air purifier. Look for an air purifier with a true HEPA filter and an anti-microbial light.
