In-Ground Pool Landscaping Design

    Add Natural Shades and Privacy

    • Add trees that can offer natural shade and privacy next to your in-ground pool. Choose trees that do not shed too much in order to keep the maintenance of your pool manageable. Choose palm trees if you live in warmer climates such as in the tropics (Hawaii), some warm parts of the West (including California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico) and the East Coast (including Georgia and Florida). Palm trees are not too invasive underground, they grow fast, and they do not shed small leaves or flowers.

Other trees you can use for your pool area that may work in most regions are magnolia trees, junipers, citrus trees and banana trees. Make sure to plant these trees not too close to the pool due to possibly invasive roots that can damage your pool.

    Create a Planting Bed

    • Create a planting bed filled with architectural foliage such as bird of paradise, agave, yucca, fern, pygmies, papyrus, horsetail and ornamental grass. Choose succulents and heat-resistant plants such as echeveria, aenium rosettes and kangaroo's paws that can thrive well throughout summer to add texture. Add color with the use of flowering plants such as daylilies, cannas and agapanthus. Put flowering plants that attract bees such as roses and lavenders away from the swimming and lounging areas to prevent bee stings. Put shade loving plants such as hostas, dracaena and bromeliads under the trees. Put the tropical plants in a pot that you can move indoors as it gets colder. Plant Jenny climb, which is a type of low-growing plant that can spread and spill to soften the edges around the pool. Place this creeping plant near boulders or rocks.

    Add Rocks and Statuaries

    • Add low-voltage or solar lights to your planting beds that can make your pool landscaping visually appealing during the day and night. Add rocks or boulders to add texture. Place statuary and urns to add visual interests. Place a sundial, birdbath, obelisk, sphere or small fountain in your flower bed to add beauty and function.
