Decorating Wedding Chuppahs
- Add a custom touch to the chuppah by employing the help of a woodworking expert. Have symbols or designs carved into the wooden poles that relate to the couple getting married. A traditional spiral design can also be carved into the poles. After the carving is done, the chuppah can be stained, then sealed with a coat of polyurethane to protect it against the weather if the ceremony is outdoors.
- Drape the chuppah with fabrics that are consistent with the rest of the ceremony decor. For example, if the chairs have chiffon sashes, use chiffon in your choice of color. The fabric can be draped around the chuppah like a bed canopy. Tie the draped sides to the poles using ribbon to keep the chuppah open. Wrap the fabric around the poles, letting the ends drape on the floor where the poles hit the ground.
- Flowers can be used to decorate the chuppah. They can be real or silk, but they should coordinate with the colors of your ceremony. Wrap a garland of mixed flowers and greens up the four poles. You can also wrap the garland around the top of the chuppah. Four matching bouquets of flowers can be attached to the top of the four poles to add color and texture.
- Satin or organza ribbons can be used to decorate the chuppah. Twist the organza ribbon and wrap it around the poles. Satin ribbons can be tied around the tops of the poles so the ends can float in the breeze. Bows can also be tied around the top of the four poles with the ends of the ribbons left to hang down.
