How to Make a Three Chamber Ocarina

    Parts of the Ocarina

    • 1). Roll out a piece of pottery clay using a rolling pin until it is 1/2-inch thick. Make sure that the clay is neither too wet nor too dry. It should not crack when it is bent, and it should not be too sticky or slippery. If your clay is too wet, add more clay. For clay that is too dry, add a small amount of water at a time until it is the right consistency. Repeat this two times until you have three clay-wrapped, carrot-shaped molds.

    • 2). Wrap the piece of flattened clay around your carrot-shaped mold so that the mold is completely covered with an even layer of clay. Smooth out any rough edges or imperfections with your fingers. Let the molded clay rest for 30 minutes.

    • 3). Roll another piece of clay with your hands and shape it into a cylinder. The width of the clay cylinder should be just large enough to fit your mouth around comfortably. The cylinder should be the length that you would like the ocarina's mouthpiece to be. Repeat this two times.

    • 4). Drive the wooden Popsicle stick lengthwise through the clay cylinder, forming a hole through the center of the cylinder. Your clay piece should be about 1/2-inch thick, with a hole that runs through the entire length of the cylinder. Repeat this two times for each of the clay cylinders. Leave the Popsicle sticks inside the cylinder.

    • 5). Slice the clay wrapped mold in half lengthwise using your butter knife. You should end up with two pieces of molded clay forms, each in the shape of one half of the carrot-shaped mold. Repeat this for each of the clay-wrapped molds. Carefully make small notches on the cut sides of the molds with the butter knife. The cuts should be no deeper than a 1/16-inch.

    Assemble the Ocarina

    • 1). Soak small pieces of clay in four times the amount of water. Mix the clay and water together until a sludgy mixture called "slip" has been formed. Rub the slip along the ridged edges of the cut side of the molded clay pieces. Place the two halves of each molded clay piece together, gently rubbing the slip smeared and cut sides of the pieces together until they have become reattached.

    • 2). Dig a hole into the wider end of one of the molded clay pieces, about an inch below the top of the molded piece. Attach one of the Popsicle cylinders to the hole in the cylinder. Use slip and small pieces of clay to make sure that only the bottom of the cylinder is attached to the molded piece. The Popsicle stick should still be visible. Repeat for the other two pieces of molded clay and cylinders.

    • 3). Cut a slant on the molded piece of clay towards the Popsicle stick using the chef's knife. Repeat for the other two pieces. Remove all three Popsicle sticks from the cylinders.

    • 4). Use the drill bits to cut holes into the molded portions so that they are a variety of sizes and are positioned in various places on the molded portion of the clay. Keep all of the holes on one side of the molded pieces of clay. Do this for each molded clay piece.

    • 5). Using slip and small pieces of softened clay, gently rub the sides of the molded pieces together until all three pieces are attached. Let your ocarina rest in a safe place that is not too humid or hot until it is fully dried. Carefully sand the ocarina with a fine-grade sanding paper. You can fire or glaze your ocarina if you wish, or you can use it as is.
