How to Get Rid of Large Cockroaches

    • 1). Lay poison around your home. Create a mixture of equal parts powdered boric acid, white flour and granulated white sugar. Place the mixture in locations where cockroaches appear and enter your home, such as the bases of doors, below and behind furniture and near trashcans. The sugar in the mixture attracts the cockroaches, the flour makes the mixture stick and the boric acid kills the pests.

    • 2). Use an insecticide spray. Visit your local hardware store and purchase an insecticide indicated for use against cockroaches. Apply the spray along the inside perimeter of your home to deny access to cockroaches and in any locations where they may be hiding. Take caution to keep children and pets away from these areas.

    • 3). Use biological control. Many species prey on cockroaches, including toads, bacteria, protozoa, beetles, mites and wasps. Parasitic wasps have been most successful in controlling cockroach populations. These insects lay eggs in cockroach cases. When new wasps are born, they feed on the cockroach case.

    • 4). Take preventative measures. Seal off all entry points, such as cracks and holes, by caulking your walls and any gaps beneath and around your doors. Keep your kitchen clean and free of food and dirty dishes. Empty your trash frequently and, if possible, keep it outside of your home.

    • 5). Call a pest-control expert. If all else fails, hire the services of a pest-control expert to diagnose your infestation and take appropriate measures. Exterminators are licensed to acquire and apply strong chemicals that are not available to the public.
