Building Codes

• Check with your local building inspector regarding regulations for constructing a shed. Some municipalities require you to submit plans if the structure exceeds a certain size. Usually, you will have to obtain a building permit before you can start the project.
  
  

Foundation

• You can choose a wood base for your shed, but a concrete foundation serves a dual purpose, providing a more durable base and also serving as a floor. Position the shed so that the door easily can be accessed, especially if you will be storing a large object, like a riding lawn mower.
  
  Place a stake in each corner about three inches from the actual lines, which will allow room for the form. Excavate eight inches of soil from the space. Make the footing about 12 inches wide and follow the local code for determining the depth, which must extend below the frost line. Pack four inches of gravel in the space. The concrete slab will be 4 inches thick. Use 2-inch by 4-inch planks to build the form.
  
  Secure stakes on the outside of the form every 36 inches. Lubricate the inside of the form, which will make detaching the board easier. This will provide extra strength for the wet concrete until it cures. Place rebar in the middle of the slab to make it more durable and less likely to crack. The base should be about an inch higher than the surrounding ground.
  
  

Assembly

• Before you start assembling the metal shed, read the instructions. Lay out the various components in the order of installation and familiarize yourself with the parts.
  
  You may need to secure rails around the perimeter of the slab and secure them in place with masonry bolts. It is best to drill the bolt holes in advance to avoid cracking the concrete. The walls usually consist of vertical corners and interior posts or columns. Secure these components in place according to the instructions. Keep in mind that you'll also need to frame the door. Mount the wall panels.
  
  Now you can assemble the roof structure. Usually, the front and rear trusses are installed before the interior trusses. Attach the roof panels as instructed in the directions and install the door. Apply caulk to ensure that the structure is properly sealed.
