Wouldn't you be in for a shock if you were informed that you had an ovarian cyst during pregnancy? Don't panic.

You will tend to get tensed since you will start thinking of the effects of the disease on the fetus or the yet to be born baby.
Ovarian Cysts are common during pregnancy.
About 1 in 1000 women have ovarian cyst during pregnancy.
And only 1 in 25000 suffers from ovarian cancer during pregnancy.
So there is no need to panic.
Further it is discovered that ovarian cysts are generally functional in nature and are hence harmless and disappear after a period of time.
Ultrasound will be used to find out if the cyst is harmless.
If the cyst is small and harmless there is nothing to worry and it will disappear on its own after sometime.
If the cyst is large and harmless there is a risk that the cyst may rupture.
This will lead to severe pain.
There is also a possibility of miscarriage or preterm delivery of the baby.
Large cysts are generally painful and are removed through surgery if there do not disappear naturally after a few weeks.
If not removed, it can affect the health and growth of the baby.
Alternatively the larger cyst can be dealt with laparoscopic ally.
However in such a case a larger incision will have to be made.
The best time to be operated would be between 14 to 16 weeks.
This is because the baby is yet in the growing stage and yet small.
If you decide to hold on till the delivery of the baby, a situation may arise for an emergency surgery.
This should be avoided in order to keep you stress free.
If the pain is not severe you can try chamomile herbal tea to reduce your pain.
Even if a surgery has become a necessity, keep in mind that they have been several women who have undergone a surgery for the removal of ovarian cysts during pregnancy and yet have delivered normal healthy babies.
