Allopathic Drugs and Herbal Medicines - What to Go For and Why
Everyone wants to switch over to organics or 100% natural products to take care of their health.
But how much do you really know about herbal healthcare options? For example, what would you choose to cure an ailment and why, when you have the option to choose between a drug and an herbal supplement? Any pharmaceutical formulation, called a drug, as we all know, is a kind of medication that aims to treat a particular disease condition.
It is meant to improve the quality of life, prolong life expectancy and also alter the chemical balance in the body for restoring any dysfunction of an organ.
On the other hand, herbal supplements are not considered to be 'drugs' in the strict sense of the term and is normally used to refer to dietary supplements.
These usually contain vitamins, minerals and other natural nutrients derived from plant sources, and merely 'supplement' the normal diet of a person.
They can never replace any food or medicine.
Though prescription drugs were once sourced from animals and plants, constant research and development in the field of medicine have enabled scientists to make medicines from synthetic ingredients.
There are also semi-synthetic drugs available where some of the ingredients can still be sourced from plant origins.
Herbal supplements on the other hand is made from herbs in the crude form and then formulated into capsules, gels, lotions and tablets.
This does not mean that the adverse effects of drugs are entirely absent from herbal supplements.
This has been the primary concern of the medical fraternity for several years now.
