Restoring Old Farmhouses - A Good Move For You?

103 7
Have you ever dreamed of having your own place in the country? Nothing elaborate, just a home with a little land, enough rooms for company, and a front porch that commands a beautiful of the sunset? There is a lot to be said for old farmhouses.
However, before you take out that mortgage, make sure you know what you are getting into.
Restoring an old farmhouse is a lot of work.
Here are some things to keep in mind.
First, you have to determine how the work is going to be accomplished.
Do you see this as a weekend project that you will do yourself? If most of the work is cosmetic in nature, then this might be a good idea.
However, if the house needs structural changes and repair, or needs a new electrical or plumbing system, keep in mind that you will need the help of professionals.
Make sure you can afford the cost of professional labor before making a final decision.
Next, keep in mind that living in the country has many advantages, but there are some drawbacks as well.
Most of us get used to living in the city or in a small town, and forget that many of the conveniences we take for granted are not part of country living.
There will not be restaurants and shops within a few minutes of the home, nor will medical attention be as close by as living in town.
If these types of conveniences are important to you, then you may want to think twice about looking at farmhouses to renovate.
Last, consider the degree of solitude that is a staple of country living.
While it is certainly possible to have guests, it is also possible that days could pass before you see anyone outside the family.
If you enjoy spending time with family with only an occasional visit from friends and other relatives, then country living will be great for you.
If you are used to meeting people at the local bar or café on a daily basis, then don't spend any time looking at farmhouses.
